An Orchid’s Glow

This shot was somewhat experimental; however, I’m not quite able to describe what my experiment actually was because I’m still obviously learning photography techniques and the lingo that goes along with it.
What I can tell you is that I placed this mini-orchid in front of our computer monitor for backlighting in a dark room. Using the curves tool in Photoshop, I pulled down the line, which I noticed decreased the output and increased the input–Bahahaha… How obvious is it that I have no clue what I’m saying?
The result was that the background became more dark, which in turn, made the orchid appear as if it is glowing.
I’m happy with how this image turned out! What do you think? Do you have a better way of describing what it was I was trying to do?

Did I Finally Accomplish What I’ve Somewhat Been Trying To Figure Out?
I’ve recently started adding the copyright symbol to my photos in an attempt to ward off people from stealing them, which in my opinion, is very distracting to the image. I thought there had to be a way to share them via SmugMug (where they are protected without the watermark), but I wasn’t quite sure how to do it and never really spent the time trying to figure it out.
As it stands, there is a Share button at the bottom of each image in SmugMug; however, it has the Facebook logo on it, so I never selected it knowing that I didn’t want to post my images there.
Ok, I may sound like the biggest nitwit right now, but I went ahead and clicked on it just a moment ago and wouldn’t ya know it, there is an option to share with WordPress. OMGosh… How ridiculous is that? Oh well, at least I can laugh at myself!
Now I just need to “Post to WordPress”; crossing my fingers that it works the way I imagine it will. If it does, I hope this information will be beneficial to someone else that may have wondered how to do the same.

Not Quite My Intention
I intended to focus on the bird to the right, but it didn’t quite work out.

Nonetheless, I like the DOF and how the birds are in the background as opposed to the foreground.

One Shot Before It Finally Flew Away
I looked out our bedroom window while I was brushing my teeth this morning and saw this hawk perched on a branch. I quickly turned off my Sonicare–before I was done cleaning my not-so pearly whites–and ran like crazy to get my camera out of our office. As I was running to head outside, I realized I didn’t have my CF card, so I ran back into our office. After getting my CF card, I beelined for the back door again.
(5D Mark II, 300mm, ISO 2000, 1/200 @ f/6.3)
I took one shot and decided to move to another spot for a different angle. As I was pulling my camera up to my face, the hawk flew away quicker than I could depress the shutter button again.
BUMMER!
